An advantage is that wiring only needs to be done once, making installation easier, without the need for separate transmitter and receiver mounting on opposite sides, as with through-beam sensors.
A disadvantage is that the detection range is shorter than that of through-beam sensors of the same level, and detection performance is significantly affected by object color, surface material, and shape.
